Undercover FBI operatives posing as al-Qaeda terrorists gave Mohamed Mohamud $2,700 to rent an apartment in Corvallis, Oregon. (FBI)
After outlining his plan, Mohamud led his two companions up Southwest Yamhill Street. They crossed the bright lights of Southwest Broadway and made their way to darker streets beyond. There, Mohamud showed them a good spot to rendezvous on the night of the bombing. He thought they should meet outside the Bike Gallery, a popular cycling shop in a town thatâs crazy about bicycles.
While they were walking and plotting their attack, an FBI team slipped into Husseinâs hotel room and plugged a device into Mohamudâs laptop that would mirror his hard drive. This would give agents a peek inside Mohamudâs cyber life.
The three men ate dinner and drove back to Corvallis. On the drive, Mohamud played a couple of jihadi audios. One featured Osama bin Laden urging Muslims to crush the disbelievers âby jihad, the bullet, and martyrdom.â
Before they reached his apartment, Mohamud devised a plan. He and Hussein would wear disguises when parking the vehicle on the night of the bombing, before meeting Youssef at the rendezvous point nearby. He suggested that they wear hard hats and orange reflective vests, making them look like employees of the cityâs Public Works Bureaus. Mohamudâs plan was to park the van in a fifteen-minute space next to the square. There, he said, they would put on their disguises and set orange traffic cones around the van, making it look as if they were on the job.
That way, he hoped, no one would tow the van away.
